ELECTRIC TT RACERS SEEK 110MPH LAP

Top electric-powered motorcycle race teams MotoCzysz and Mugen will again to go head to head in the SES TT Zero Race on the Isle of Man next week.

Motorcycle industry news brought to you by British Dealer News
Silent and speedy: Electric TT bikes
Both teams broke the 100mph average speed barrier around the TT Mountain Course last year, with the Japanese outfit Mugen splitting the MotoCzysz pair, with all three podium placed riders posting times in excess of 100mph.

Michael Rutter took the honours and a cheque for £10,000 in 2012 with the first ever 100mph lap recorded by an electric bike, but he was chased all the way by John McGuinness's Mugen, finishing with a time of 102.2mph, 23 seconds behind. Mark Miller was a further 15 seconds back in third place.

Electric TT bikes - would give anyone a thrill
This year Rutter will be first away on the road, followed by his MotoCzysz teammate Mark Miller. MotoCzysz are looking to achieve an average lap speed in excess of 110mph, a time that would make them competitive in the conventional 650cc Supertwin class.

Nineteen time TT champion John McGuinness will again lead the Mugen effort but on an extensively modified bike that features an all-new chassis and power train as well as completely new bodywork. The team has targeted a lap in excess of 110mph.

DUNLOP BIKE RACING TYRE PRODUCTION AT RISK

The Dunlop Motorsport factory at Fort Dunlop in Birmingham — which manufactures all of the brand’s motorcycle race tyres — is in jeopardy after its landlord sold a new lease on the 11-acre site to Jaguar Land Rover for an expansion of Jaguar’s adjacent Castle Bromwich plant.

Dunlop: relocation imminent

Dunlop’s current lease expires in May 2014. Its 180 employees at the facility have been informed of this sudden development, although full implications — which will obviously involve production relocation elsewhere — are not yet clear.

“We have a robust contingency plan to ensure continued supply of our tyres to our key customers,” said Dunlop Motorsport Europe general manager Jean-Felix Bazelin in a statement. “Our aim is to assess impact and evaluate possible alternatives.”

DSA CLARIFIES AGE RULES FOR INSTRUCTORS

The Driving Standards Agency has made the information about the minimum age to be a motorcycle instructor easier to understand. It now has a tool on www.gov.uk/become-a-motorcycle-instructor  which helps anyone thinking about becoming a motorcycle instructor to check their eligibility. This has been updated to take account of the EU Third Directive changes on 19 January this year.

Motorcycle Industry News brought to you by British Dealer News www.britishdealernews.co.uk
Want to be an instructor?

An ATB manual  (www.gov.uk/motorcycle-approved-training-body-atb-manual#certified-instru... ) explains the full eligibility criteria for anyone who wants to become a motorcycle instructor. The minimum age limit remains at 21 for riders who passed a category A2 or category A test before 19 January 2013. A rider who passes a category A2 test at 19 followed by a category A test two years later at 21, can become an instructor at 22 once they have held full motorcycle entitlement for 3 years.

Instructors must hold the category of licence they are providing training for. For example, an instructor who holds a category A2 licence can provide training for category A1 and A2 but not category A.

NEW MOTORCYCLE MANAGER AT DUNLOP MOTORSPORT

Following the retirement of industry veteran Steve Male after 43 years with the company, Dunlop Motorsport has appointed Jason Dee as manager for its Motorcycle Motorsport Europe unit.

Motorcycle Industry News from British Dealer News www.britishdealernews.co.uk
Jason Dee - New Dunlop Manager

Dee, who has been with the tyre brand for 16 years, was most recently responsible for the motorsport sales and operating process as well as supply chain functions. He was also product manager for the sector between 2007 and 2010 and worked on Dunlop’s MotoGP programme between 2001 and 2003.

Motorsport Europe general manager Jean-Felix Bazelin said: “In the past two years we have strengthened our management team with five new appointments, across marketing, design, finance and now business operations. I’m delighted that each of these appointments has been the result of in-house talent development, bringing strength and experience to our team as we plan for the next exciting chapter in Dunlop’s 125 years of winning. Jason brings vast experience of both the business and the sport and will play a key role in driving Dunlop to future racing success.”

Paying tribute to Male, he added: “Steve has guided the Motorsport team to some of its greatest successes. Dunlop chooses to prove its tyres in competition with the other tyre manufacturers and, in the past decade in particular, we have been the most successful tyre manufacturer in two of the most demanding arenas — the Endurance World Championship and Isle of Man TT. This success is due to strong teamwork across design, manufacturing and the commercial operation, and Steve’s leadership has been a driver of this success.”

SECOND ROYAL ENFIELD FACTORY IN PRODUCTION

Royal Enfield has rolled out the first bike from its new manufacturing plant at Oragadam in southern India.

The factory, which sits on 50-acre site and cost £17.8m to develop, will eventually more than double Enfield’s existing output from its smaller original facility at Thiruvottiyur near Chennai. Described by company chief executive Siddhartha Lal (pictured) as “the nucleus of our global ambitions” at its official opening ceremony, Oragadam currently has the capability to produce 150,000 units annually. This will increase to a 175,000-unit capacity for 2014, when Royal Enfield plans to be churning out a total of more than a quarter of a million motorcycles a year — up from 113,000 in 2012.

Siddhartha Lal also used the event to announce Royal Enfield’s biggest-ever “made in India” motorcycle, a 525cc Continental GT model to be built at Oragadam and launched in 2014.
