NEWS: FOR WHOM THE BUELL TOLLS: NO MORE BUELL...

FOR WHOM THE BUELL TOLLS

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

The manufacturing assets of bankrupt US superbike producer Erik Buell Racing (EBR) were finally sold off at an auction on 13 January for about $2m. The buyer was Liquid Asset Partners, a Michigan-based company that trades in machinery, equipment and parts inventory from defunct engineering businesses.

This was the third attempt to dispose of EBR’s forlorn remains. At an initial auction early last autumn, the successful bidder was Bruce Belfer, who agreed to acquire the assets package for $2.25m and intended to relaunch EBR as a going concern making motorcycles, with the involvement of eponymous company founder Erik Buell.

However, Belfer failed to meet a payment deadline, because he couldn’t get the necessary finance in place. Wisconsin’s Walworth County Circuit Judge Phillip Koss, who was overseeing EBR bankruptcy proceedings, then ordered a second auction to take place on 10 December. On this occasion, the sole bidder was Liquid Asset Partners with an offer of $1.6m.

But a number of interested parties, including Belfer, complained to court-appointed receiver Michael Polsky that they hadn’t had enough time to prepare challenging bids. When Polsky reported this to Judge Koss, he declined to approve the purchase and ordered yet another auction.

This time, the result is likely to stick. Polsky says the increased bid is in excess of the liquidation value of the assets and he believes that the proposed sale is in the best interest of all creditors. So once Koss has ratified the latest Liquid Asset Partners offer, any hope an EBR revival will vanish.

NEWS: Triumph boss wins award

Triumph Motorcycles owner John Bloor OBE has been awarded the Royal Automobile Club's Diamond Jubilee Trophy for the brand's outstanding contribution to the motorcycle industry. Only the fifth recipient of the award in its prestigious 58-year history, Bloor accepted the honour on behalf of all the staff at Triumph Motorcycles.

BDN is the best place for motorcycle industry news

Presented at a ceremony at the RAC's prestigious London HQ, the accolade is widely regarded as one of industry's most esteemed awards. Previous winners include Sir Christopher Cockerell, inventor of the hovercraft; the British Aircraft Corporation and Aerospatiale (France), for the development of Concorde; and Sir Richard Noble, for setting a new land speed record of 633.486mph.

John Bloor rescued Triumph from administration in 1983. With notable investment, he was able to rebuild the business from its new base in Hinckley, Leicestershire, establishing it, until it was deposed by BMW at the end of last year, as the UK's leading large-capacity motorcycle manufacturer.

In 2015, Triumph Motorcycles sold 8259 motorcycles and reported an annual turnover of £341.3m, generating a profit of £2.3m. The business has always seen R&D as a strategic priority, investing over £25m (about 7.5% of turnover) per annum in 2014 and 2015. During the previous financial year, the company, which employs 2300 people globally, sold 53,812 motorcycles. Throughout the year, Triumph continued significant investment in new model development and in its manufacturing and distribution networks in India, Thailand and Brazil.

Commenting on the announcement, Ben Cussons of the Royal Automobile Club, said: "It gives me enormous pleasure to present the Diamond Jubilee Trophy to John Bloor OBE and the staff at Triumph Motorcycles. All the previous recipients have been 'game changers' and there is no exception with Triumph. The team has transformed Triumph from one of the most iconic British brands to a globally recognised one. Their commitment to manufacturing excellence and a single-minded determination to build the 'best of British' has enabled them to succeed in an intensely competitive market. This outstanding achievement and commitment to quality and innovation embody all that the trophy represents."

John Bloor replied: "I am delighted to accept this trophy on behalf of all the staff at Triumph Motorcycles. From the design department in Hinckley, to our global manufacturing facilities and worldwide sales and distribution offices, everyone at Triumph works with passion and pride to excite and engage with our customers. The success of the brand is, without doubt, down to the skill and commitment of our team."

NEWS: SURTEES MADE CBE FOR SERVICES TO MOTORSPORT

SURTEES MADE CBE FOR SERVICES TO MOTORSPORT

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

Four-time 500cc motorcycle world champion and Formula One championship winner John Surtees, 81, is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the Queen’s New Year Honours. The citation reads for services to motorsport. Surtees, of Lingfield, Surrey, is already an OBE, an honour bestowed in 2008 (see picture).

Surtees motorcycle GP titles came in 1956, 58, 59 and 1960. He won the Formula One championship in 1964 and remains the only person to have won world championships on both two and four wheels.

He is an ambassador for the Racing Steps Foundation, which helps a small number of talented but underfunded racing drivers to achieve their potential.

Surtees is the son of a south London motorcycle dealer. He had his first professional outing in the sidecar of his father's Vincent, which they won. However, when race officials discovered Surtees's age, they were disqualified. He entered his first race at 15 in a grasstrack competition.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

In 1950, at the age of 16, he went to work for the Vincent factory as an apprentice. He made his first headlines in 1951 when he gave Norton star Geoff Duke a strong challenge in an ACU race at Thruxton.

In 1955, Norton race chief Joe Craig gave Surtees his first factory-sponsored ride aboard the Nortons. He finished the year by beating reigning world champion Duke at Silverstone and then at Brands Hatch. However, with Norton in financial trouble and uncertain about its racing plans, Surtees accepted an offer to race for the MV Agusta factory racing team, where he soon earned the nickname figlio del vento (son of the wind).

In 1956 Surtees won the 500cc world championship, MV Agusta's first in the senior class. This was the season that the FIM banned the defending champion, Geoff Duke, for six months because of his support for a riders' strike for more starting money.

In the 1957 season, the MV Agustas were no match for the Gileras and Surtees battled to a third-place finish aboard a 1957 MV Agusta 500 Quattro.

When Gilera and Moto Guzzi pulled out of Grand Prix racing at the end of 1957, Surtees and MV Agusta went on to dominate the competition in the two larger displacement classes. In 1958, 1959 and 1960, he won 32 out of 39 races and became the first man to win the Senior TT at the Isle of Man TT three years in succession.
