NEWS: HOREX — ANOTHER PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES

HOREX — ANOTHER PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
Horex- are back
The new owner of Germany’s recently defunct Horex motorcycle brand has announced that it is back in business once again and will unveil an updated version of the 1200cc, six-cylinder VR6 roadster at EICMA Milan in November.

Horex, a historic German bike marque which was folded in 1960 by then-owner Daimler, had been relaunched in 2010. But it subsequently filed for bankruptcy protection last autumn and then closed down altogether shortly afterwards. Its assets, including tooling, parts and intellectual property, were auctioned off by court-appointed insolvency administrator Rainer Müller in February this year.

The successful bidder was 3C-Carbon Group, a rapidly expanding carbon-fibre composites manufacturer serving the automotive, mechanical engineering, medical technology and aerospace industries. It has factories at Landsberg am Lech and Baden-Württemberg in Germany plus a facility in Switzerland.

Following the acquisition, a 3C-Carbon statement said: “In order to lead the Horex brand to a new bout of glory, essential optimisations are going to be required from a technical and organisational perspective. The goal is to devise a marketable concept in order to get new clientele enthusiastic about Horex.”

Undoubtedly equipped with the resources and finance to make this a realistic commercial proposition, 3C-Carbon also has a substantial track record in motorcycle sports. It owns and operates the 3C-Racing team fielding Ducati-mounted Xavi Forés and Lorenzo Lanzi in the IDM German Superbike Championship. Forés and his Panigale won last year’s series and the squad are already front-runners in 2015.

NEWS: BUDGET PROS AND CONS FOR BIKES

BUDGET PROS AND CONS FOR BIKES

Budget Pros and Cons for Bikes
George Osborne
The jury’s definitely divided on whether UK Chancellor George Osborne has done much for motorcycling in general and the bike trade in particular with his 8 July Budget announcements.

Osborne’s only specific action relating to powered two-wheelers was to launch a consultation on extending the deadline for first MoT tests from three to four years, which he claimed would collectively save car drivers and bike riders more than £100m a year.

While it may help some dealers trade on a growing volume of returned three-year-old machines financed through PCP from new with less hassle and expense, others with a steady flow of MoT testing income are going to be out of pocket.

And then there’s the safety issue, perhaps more pertinent to cars than bikes. Under the current regime, about 20 per cent of three-year-old cars fail their first MoT, frequently on knackered tyres. Both the Retail Motor Industry Federation and campaigning group TyreSafe have kicked off about this risk.

Responding to Osborne, TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson said: “At present the evidence strongly indicates any extension of the interval between MoT tests or the deadline for the first will result in more defective and dangerous tyres and vehicles on our roads. TyreSafe’s tread depth survey has already indicated nearly ten million illegal tyres will be on Britain’s roads in 2015. We need that number to drop, not rise, if we are to reduce the number of tyre-related incidents.”

Countering TyreSafe’s view is the argument that much longer manufacturers’ warranties on new bikes and cars ensure they are regularly dealer-serviced, thereby tackling age-related defects. And, unless it does a pathetically low annual mileage with the throttle shut, a new motorcycle’s tyres aren’t going to last more than a couple of years anyway.

Beyond that, the only other thing in the Budget affecting our business sector is reform of Vehicle Excise Tax, returning it towards the original concept of “Road Fund Tax” with £6bn of the revenue ring-fenced for road repairs and improvements. A fine concept, sure. But fewer potholes will also mean a reduction in the repair revenue stream for dealers too.

News: Team Obsolete Back Classic TT with Rare 1954 AJS Porcupine

The AJS Porcupine, the only British multi-cylinder grand prix bike made in the historic era, will make its return to the Classic TT presented by Bennetts in August, 61 years after the factory Porcupines last raced in the Isle of Man in 1954.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
AJS Porcupine
American tuner/collector Robert Iannucci will bring the DOHC 500cc E95 twin for Dave Roper, the winner of the 1984 Historic TT on a Matchless G50, to ride in the Jurby festival on August 30 and in the Classic Racer Classic TT Lap of Honour on August 31. Iannucci, the owner of Team Obsolete equippe in Brooklyn, New York, is delighted to be reuniting the AJS with the Mountain circuit after a 33-year restoration that has involved exhaustive searches for data, parts and key factory personnel who were involved with the Porcupine.

"The Manx Norton and Matchless G50 factory bikes of that era were only development versions of the single-cylinder production racers that they sold to customers," Iannucci says. "AJS was the only British manufacturer to make unique factory racers that were not for sale. Only four E95s were ever made."

The Porcupine earned its nickname from the spiky finning of the cylinder heads on the original E90 model. That bike earned AJS a place in motorcycling history by winning the inaugural 500cc World Championship in 1949, ridden by Les Graham, who beat the four-cylinder Gileras that were later to dominate racing's premier class.

Indeed, Graham almost won the 1949 Senior TT, the opening round of the newly instituted championship: he led the 264-mile race until Hillberry corner on the last lap, when the magneto drive broke and he pushed in the final two miles to finish tenth. Porcupines continued to compete at the TT until 1954, but were increasingly outpaced by the Gileras, and even the factory Manx Norton singles, which received a much more intensive development programme.

However, the Porcupine remains an important motorcycle in racing history because of that 1949 championship, the bike's rarity, and because it is the only twin-cylinder motorcycle ever to win the 500cc world title.  The final 1954 version, with the pannier petrol tank, is arguably the most distinctive grand prix of the classic era.

It was this very rarity that compounded Iannucci's challenge in getting his Porcupine back onto the track. But he was driven by a passion for the machines created by the engineers at the AMC group in South London, which made the AJS and Matchless brands. In 2013 Iannucci brought to the Classic TT Rod Coleman's "Junior" TT winning 1954 AJS 7R3 - a three-valve factory version of the two-valve 7R production racer - and last year he presented the 1959 Matchless G50 on which Roper won the 1984 "Senior" Historic TT.

Now the Team Obsolete patron returns to support the Classic TT with his most challenging restoration yet.
