Anchor presenter Matt Roberts will be joined by former racers Steve Plater and Cameron Donald. Both have enjoyed TT Mountain Course success with Steve Plater winning the 2008 Supersport and 2009 Senior TT Races while Cameron Donald was a double TT Race winner – Superbike and Superstock - in 2008.  Experienced Motorsport broadcaster Dave Moore will provide additional commentary on the race action.

The clock gets turned back on Tuesday 28 May at 9pm to what many believe was the greatest race of all time. ‘The Greatest Race - Hislop vs Fogarty’ tells the story of the 1992 Senior TT through interviews with Carl Fogarty and many others that were involved in this remarkable race.

With visits to the Honda Racing, Norton and Milenco by Padgetts Racing work shops to eavesdrop on their pre-TT preparations the scene will definitely be set for TT 2019 race week.

NEWS: TRIUMPH LEADS DRIVE TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

TRIUMPH LEADS DRIVE TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

TRIUMPH LEADS DRIVE TO DEVELOP ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES

Triumph Motorcycles has revealed a two-year project to develop electric motorcycle capabilities, providing an input into the brand’s future electric motorcycle offering.

The project involves a unique collaboration between UK industry and academia – Triumph Motorcycles, Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd’s e-Drive Division, and WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group, an academic department at the University of Warwick). It is supported and co-funded by the UK government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), via Innovate UK.

“This collaboration represents an exciting opportunity for Triumph and its partners to be leaders in the technology that will enable the electrification of motorcycles, which is driven by customers striving to reduce their environmental impact, combined with the desire for more economical transportation, and changing legislation,” said Nick Bloor, Triumph CEO. “Project Triumph TE-1 is one part of our electric motorcycle strategy, focused on delivering what riders want and expect from their Triumph, which is the perfect balance of handling, performance and usability.”

Triumph Motorcycles will lead the project, providing advanced motorcycle chassis design and engineering expertise, manufacturing excellence and pioneering functional safety systems, as well as defining electric drivetrain power delivery characteristics.

Williams Advanced Engineering will provide industry-leading lightweight battery design and integration capability, using its test and development facilities to deliver an innovative battery management system combined with vehicle control unit.

Integral Powertrain Ltd’s e-Drive Division will lead the development of bespoke power-dense electric motors and a silicon carbide inverter, integrating both into a singular motor housing.

WMG, at the University of Warwick, will provide electrification expertise, and the critical vision to drive innovation from R&D to commercial impact, through modelling and simulation based on future market needs.

Innovate UK, the government agency that promotes science and technology programmes expected to expand the UK economy, will support the partners and administer funds. This forms part of the BEIS modern funding strategy with the aim of creating a market-leading UK electric vehicle capability.

The project will be in four main phases, with one of its key aims being increased systems integration. By developing individual components of automotive-based electric drivetrains and optimising them into innovative combined units, the project aims to deliver sophisticated electric motorcycle systems which reduce mass, complexity and package requirements.

Triumph Motorcycles will work alongside the partner organisations to accelerate joint expertise in the packaging and safety of batteries, optimum electric motor sizing and packaging, the integration of braking systems including regenerative braking, and advanced safety systems. The innovation and capabilities developed in these areas will input into Triumph’s future electric motorcycle strategy.

The Project Triumph TE-1 partnership, with the support of Innovate UK, is focused on facilitating the creation of:

•    Electric motorcycle capability that meets the needs of customers seeking lower environmental impact transportation, delivering against the UK’s focus on reducing emissions
•    Strong, commercially viable and sustainable partnerships with UK industry manufacturers
and supply chains
•    Expertise and capability within the UK workforce, creating jobs and a talent base that both ensures sustainable employment and drives the UK’s reputation and influence on the world stage.

“Electric motorcycles will have a vital role to play in future transport across the globe, delivering reduced congestion and improved urban air quality as well as easing parking," said Professor David Greenwood, of the Advanced Propulsion Systems at WMG. "They will also be great to ride, with copious, easily controlled torque delivered smoothly at all road speeds. WMG has experience of battery technology and vehicle electrification for road, rail, sea and air which it will bring to this exciting sector. Our expert team will lead the modelling and simulation work within the project, to ensure the vehicles are safe and efficient without compromise to dynamic performance.” .

Steve Sargent, Triumph’s chief product officer said: “Our future product strategy is focused on delivering the most suitable engine platforms for the changing landscape of customer needs, and we see a Triumph electric powertrain as a significant requirement alongside our signature twin and triple cylinder engines. As part of our electric motorcycle initiative, Project Triumph TE-1 represents an exciting collaboration that will provide valuable input into our future line-up. We are incredibly pleased to have the support of OLEV and Innovate UK, and to be working together with the UK’s electrification experts and academic leaders, in an endeavour that ultimately is focused on the future prosperity of British industry, and the future of motorcycling.”

NEWS: LANDMARK YEAR FOR THE NORTH-WEST 200

Practice for the 2019 International North West 200 race week is under way, with the main race day on Saturday (18 May).

2019 North West 200: Harrison tops first Superbike qualifying

The event is a special year for the Coleraine and District Motor Club, the event organisers, as this will be the 90th anniversary of the North Coast races.

‘We are planning some very special events for our birthday celebrations,’ said event director Mervyn Whyte.

The 2018 event was a huge success for Whyte and his team as Glenn Irwin won both superbike races on the PBM/Be Wiser Ducati in front of sun-kissed crowds. The event’s most successful rider, Alastair Seeley, claimed his 24th Triangle course victory with a hat-trick of triumphs on the Tyco BMW and EHA Yamahas and Peter Hickman also claimed his maiden North West win on the Smith’s BMW.

Seeley has won at least one race at every North West since 2008 and with the aid of three trebles and a four-timer in recent years his record tally of victories now stands at 24, half of those coming in the Supersport class.

Thursday 16th May    Practice    9.15am – 3.00pm

NEWS: POLICE OFFICER FACES 'GROSS MIDCONDUCT' CHARGE OVER MOPED CRASH

POLICE OFFICER FACES 'GROSS MIDCONDUCT' CHARGE OVER MOPED CRASH

POLICE OFFICER FACES 'GROSS MIDCONDUCT' CHARGE OVER MOPED CRASH

A policeman involved in a "tactical contact" incident involving a fleeing alleged criminal is facing a charge of gross misconduct. As we reported in our Friday eletter, and on our website, eight cases involving 10 officers are under review so more charges may well follow.

According to a posting on Facebook, the police constable involved has been served with a "Notice for gross misconduct hearing to be held in public between 7 and 10 May.

It is alleged the PC "breached the standards of professional behaviour in relation to use of force and duties and responsibilities".

It is alleged that whilst driving a marked police car, the officer "manoeuvred his vehicle into the path of a moped being driven by a 17-year-old male in order to stop it, causing a collision".

The hearing will take place at Empress State Building, and viewing is by video link to a dedicated room on the premises.

Anyone wishing to attend has to register at www.met.police.uk

There's no sign of a petition in support of the police but if we hear of one, we'll let you know.
