YAMAHA SIGNS UP FOR NEW DIRT BIKE SHOW

Yamaha has not only signed up for the relocated International Dirt bike Show, it has taken its biggest stand ever, according to organiser Mortons Media Group, which also says that since the news broke that the event was moving to Stafford County Showground from Stoneleigh Park, feedback has been positive – "from both a trade and enthusiast perspective".

The show will be held over two days, 28/29 September.

Jeff Turner, marketing manager of Yamaha, said: “The annual Dirt Bike Show continues to provide us with a unique opportunity to showcase Yamaha off-road products and we are delighted to be able to support Mortons again for its new 2019 event, as it develops and invests in the show to ensure its future viability and success.

“The exciting changes that are planned, along with the different venue, look set to take the event to a new level, while the revised timing and cost restructuring should ensure support from the industry and, in turn, increases to visitor numbers.”

Although the show coincides with the Motocross of Nations at Assen, organisers Mortons Media Group intends to cater for race fans at the show with a live stream throughout the weekend.

TRIBUTE: To Granby Jack

My father, John Glover - or ‘Granby Jack’ as he was known to most - dedicated his adult life to his passion for motorcycles. As a young man he was an enthusiastic club racer and in 1967, to fund his expensive hobby after completing his engineering apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce in Derby, he rented a tiny, two-room unit in Granby Street, Ilkeston, where Granby Motors was born.

Jack Glover, Granby Motors

One of the pioneers of Japanese bike sales in the UK, the business grew quickly and soon moved to larger premises in Ilkeston, with a flat above into which Jack moved with wife Gloria. Following the birth of his son, Jack gave up racing but Granby Motors maintained its involvement in the UK road racing scene for the next 30 years, initially selling the Spondon Engineering-framed Granby Yamaha 125, raced by British champion and fellow Rolls-Royce alumnus Austin Hockley in the early 1970s, and supporting the early racing careers of Neil Tuxworth and several other local riders.

By the late 1980s, Granby Motors had become one of the UK’s largest motorcycle dealers, with a large warehouse and five retail outlets across the East Midlands, holding franchises between them for all the major Japanese manufacturers.

My father loved to travel and never really left his work far behind. He consequently had a lot of friends and business contacts abroad. Leveraging these, he built a parallel (no pun intended) business, importing and exporting bikes and parts around the globe (including back to Japan – earning him a starring role in several “coals-to-Newcastle”-style national news reports), exploiting pre-single-currency local market pricing and significantly undercutting the official distributors in the process.

Jack Glover, Granby Motors

Jack saw this as a fair and reasonable activity and helped form the trade organisation the Association of Parallel Importers to provide a code of conduct and reassure consumers. Following a protracted legal battle over trademark infringement with Honda UK in 1999, the import business disappeared overnight, Granby Motors lost its retail franchises in quick succession and its finance company withdrew, leaving the business hanging in the balance.

Jack carried on undeterred, focusing on smaller machines, used bikes and spares. Ever the entrepreneur, he went off-script in seeking to replace the lost trade, including pioneering forays into e-bikes and Chinese mopeds and scooters but the business never fully recovered and by 2006, Granby Motors was reduced to a single retail outlet in Ilkeston.

Never afraid to get his hands dirty - literally and metaphorically - he supported the business financially and continued working even as his health deteriorated, until December 2015 when the difficult decision was made to close the business for good.

He died peacefully at home on 30 January.

NEWS: SCOTTISH MOTORCYCLE SHOW DRAWS THE CROWDS

SCOTTISH MOTORCYCLE SHOW DRAWS THE CROWDS

The Scottish Motorcycle Show at Ingliston in Edinburgh drew in the crowds on Saturday, despite clashing with the Scotland versus Wales Six Nations rugby match at nearby Murraryfield. Sunday morning motorcyclists and biking fans woke up to an inch of snow which, although clearing later in the day, was unfortunate timing!

Ducati Glasgow, supported by Ducati UK, presented for the first time in Scotland the 2019 range which comprises 11 bikes, including seven completely new motorcycles, Corse models and selected Ducati Scramblers.

The highly anticipated Ducati Panigale V4 R was revealed at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday to a huge audience.

Managing director Martin Rees was upbeat about the show and the state of the market. More in the next issue of BDN. The dealership kicks off its motorcycling season with a Season Opening and New Model Launch Party on 30/31 March, when customers will get an early glimpse of the complete Ducati model range.

Yamaha's supported stand was also impressive, mimicking the feel of a dealer showroom.

NEWS: SAD PASSING OF MIKE PEARCE

SAD PASSING OF MIKE PEARCE

SAD PASSING OF MIKE PEARCE

Mike Pearce & Sons writes:

It is with regret that we report the passing on 13 February of Mike Pearce, proprietor of Mike Pearce & Sons. He had been battling mesothelioma for just over four years and died peacefully in his sleep with his wife Carol at his side.

Born in Edgware, his family moved to Devon when he was a child. He spent a year in South Dakota, USA, on a scholarship and graduated from high school while there. This experience had a lasting effect on him as many will remember by the fact that he always wore cowboy boots!

He and his family made many visits to friends and his American “family” over the years.

Although attending Seale Hayne Agricultural College, his main love was always anything and everything mechanical and, having worked in motor factors in his early career, he then branched out on his own.

Initially running a sales and servicing business in Exeter, in the mid-nineties he moved into wholesaling, first with Morris Lubricants but then adding a wide range of hard parts.

In 2005 he became the importer for TRW products and Esjot sprockets, later adding the Buse clothing range.

In later years his interests widened to providing paddock support for the British Superbike series as Mike Pearce Racing. This was also coupled with preparing the race bike for his eldest son, Matt, who competed in the Superstock 1000 class for just over two years.

He himself previously competed as a solo enduro rider before being persuaded by his wife to upgrade to riding sidecar with her in the chair. This he did for many years, which also included an upgrade of the passenger.

Mike faced his terminal diagnosis with his usual mixture of grit, pragmatism and a very black sense of humour, determined that he would make the most of whatever time was left to him. This included a month spent touring New Zealand in 2015 and a two-month tour of the USA in 2016. Although his health prevented him from being in the BSB paddock in 2017, he returned in 2018 and could often be seen bombing around on his little buggy, doing what he loved best – talking to people and discussing racing and anything mechanical.

He will be greatly missed, as evidenced by the tremendous number of tributes placed on Facebook. There will be a large hole in the industry where he once was.

He leaves his wife, Carol, who helped him in the business, and two sons, Matt and Robbie.

The funeral will be held on Monday, 11 March, at 2.30pm, Taunton Crematorium TA1 5AE.

John Roberts, North of England sales agent, writes: “Many years ago I rang Mike up in response to an advert in the motorcycle press for a position as sales agent. I advised him that I was already of "advanced years" and was not a dynamic young "go getter". We agreed to meet at a motorway service area where my mind was soon put at ease by his friendly, honest attitude. From then on it was a pleasure to work for him and Carol. What a lot of people will know was his enthusiastic support for the BSB: maybe not as well-known was his involvement in sidecar enduro events riding a 500cc Maico EML outfit with his wife Carol in, and, sometimes out of the chair!!

The many messages on his Facebook page all sum him up in the same way -  "a straight-forward good guy".   These messages have been a source of comfort to his wife Carol and family.

God Bless and RIP Mike

NEWS: ANOTHER HAMPSHIRE DIRTBIKE DEALER ROBBED

ANOTHER HAMPSHIRE DIRTBIKE DEALER ROBBED

Well-known Gosport specialist off-road dealership Trevor Pope Motorcycles has become the victim of yet another bike theft gang. Raiders broke into its showroom on the town’s Forton Road at around 11pm on 21 February and stole four machines — a trio of KTM 250 SX-F motocrossers and a KTM 450 EXC-F enduro bike.

Hampshire Constabulary believes the bikes were taken off Forton Road, the main A32, down a nearby quieter side-turning Leonard Road, and presumably loaded into a van there. PC Tyler Dutson, the officer handling this investigation, has made an appeal for witnesses: “We are keen to find out who these people are, which roads they took and if they used any other vehicles in the burglary. We would also like to hear from anyone who has since seen these distinctive-looking motorbikes.”

Trevor Pope Motorcycles, run by husband-and-wife team Trevor and Sandra, and employing a further seven staff, is the second Hampshire target for a robbery of this type in the past few months. Cheriton-based Winchester Off-Road Honda, sharing premises with sister business Husky Sport, was ram-raided last November — losing six bikes.

Anyone with information should call 101, quoting crime reference number 44190063874.

NEWS: DAINESE PROMOTES TRACK FUN AND SAFETY

DAINESE PROMOTES TRACK FUN AND SAFETY

DAINESE PROMOTES TRACK FUN AND SAFETY

Dainese has launched the Dainese Experience, the project that gives all fans of the Vicenza brand the chance to experience dynamic sports in unique ways. The Dainese Experience will kick off on 17 April with the Riding Master class at Misano Adriatico.

The Dainese Experience is made up of different types of classes including those dedicated to safe riding and those on the track, adventure trips to one-of-a-kind locations, and exclusive weekends revolving around racing events ‒ such as MotoGP and Ski World Cup competitions ‒ giving sports enthusiasts who share the same passion an opportunity to get together.

The Dainese Experience will debut with the Riding Master class on 17 April at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. This class is aimed at all motorcycle fans, from absolute beginners to aspiring professional riders. The master classes will be divided into different riding levels and will be led by qualified instructors.

The Dainese VR46 Class will provide the exclusive opportunity to ride the Misano circuit together with living legend Valentino Rossi for the first time. The lucky participants will benefit from time with the nine-time World Champion, who will share the talent and experience that led him to become the most successful professional rider in motorcycle racing today. The event is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn Vale’s techniques and secrets so that the participants can improve their lap times and riding style. Tickets for the VR46 Class will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be donated to the Marco Simoncelli Foundation.

The Champions Class brings motorcycle fans to the track with the VR46 Riders Academy professionals, champions who hold the Dainese flag high in the MotoGP World Championship. Franco Morbidelli, Luca Marini, Lorenzo Baldassarri, and Marco Bezzecchi will be the world-class instructors. The Champions Class is perfect for those who already have track experience and want to discuss advanced riding techniques directly with the professional riders, taking advantage of the talent they share with the participants.

The Dainese Riding Master class is split into Racing Classes and Safety Classes. The Racing Classes consist of five riding sessions with qualified instructors and are designed for those who already have excellent skills on the bike. This is their opportunity to make their first foray on the track or hone their braking and cornering techniques. The Safety Classes are designed for less experienced riders who want to familiarise themselves with the basics of riding or gain confidence on their bike while enjoying a fun day, in total safety.

All the details are available in the “Experience” section of the website dainese.com, which will be updated regularly with information on upcoming events.
