NEWS: STEVE MCQUEEN TRIUMPH ACHIEVES WORLD RECORD PRICE

STEVE MCQUEEN TRIUMPH ACHIEVES WORLD RECORD PRICE

The 1938 Triumph 5T Speed Twin formerly owned by Steve McQueen sold for $175,500 at the Rio Hotel & Casino, Bonhams’ annual Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction, last Thursday (24 January). The price set a new world auction record and the audience erupted in cheers and applause.

Another highlight was the 1993 Ducati Supermono, one of just 67 made, that was bought for $115,000, as well as the 1974 Munch Mammoth TTS, known as the world’s first superbike, that made $112,000. Another crowd favorite was the collection of six 1971 Honda Motorsport models – the full range of that model-year offered as one lot – that was purchased by a young lady from France, much to the delight of attendees.

Craig Mallery of Bonhams’ US motorcycle department, said: “We had a very impressive selection of about125 rare, uncommon and high-quality motorcycles on offer this year. It’s a selective market at the moment and while some of our motorcycles didn’t meet reserve, there were many exceptional sales.”

And talking of exceptional prices, a pair of new-in-crate Honda Z50 ‘monkey bikes’ brought an astonishing $51,150 at the Mecum sale, also in Las Vegas. These were dealer-only ‘Christmas Special’ models, gifts from the Honda factory to their best-selling dealers, and had an all-chrome finish. Twenty other Honda Z50s of various vintages were sold at Mecum’s South Point Hotel venue, with an average price of $5500, although one other Christmas Special sold for $13,200.

NEWS: UNINTERRUPTED GROWTH FOR KTM

UNINTERRUPTED GROWTH FOR KTM

KTM: Doing well

Europe’s largest motorcycle manufacturer, KTM Industries, has revealed an eighth-consecutive annual record of rising revenue, profit and sales volume in preliminary full-year results for 2018. BDN financial editor Roger Willis reports.

Turnover was 1.7% up to £1.356bn. Operating profit rose by 21.5% to £140m, with an adjusted operating margin of 8.6%. Pre-tax profit reached £124.6m, a 22.4% improvement.

Volume grew by 9.7% to a total of 261,454 motorcycles. The KTM brand accounted for 212,899 of these, while Husqvarna added 48,555. The company also claimed disproportionately large market-share gains on both sides of the Atlantic. In Europe, where total bike sales grew by about 8% last year, KTM brands increased their registrations by 21.5% — corresponding to a market share of 11.7%. And in the declining US market, where overall numbers fell by 2.3%, KTM bucked that trend by putting on 8.5% and lifting share to 8.9%.

These successes were partly attributed to launches of the new KTM Duke 790, plus Husqvarna’s Svartpilen and Vitpilen street models.

During 2019, KTM Industries intends to shift production of smaller-capacity Husqvarna road bikes to its Indian manufacturing partner Bajaj — which already makes all the smaller KTM-branded road kit — to cut costs. And it has set a global sales target of 400,000 motorcycles annually by 2022.

EVENTS: CLASSIC SHOW CELEBRATES 100TH TT

CLASSIC SHOW CELEBRATES 100TH TT

Classic Motorcycle Show Stafford
Stafford show- lots inside, more outside!
The Isle of Man TT's 100th meeting this year will be celebrated at the Stafford International Classic MotorCycle Show. Top-name riders and the famous machines that carried them to victory around one of the most famous race circuits in the world will be on display at the 27/28 April event.

Headlining the list of star guests are current TT stars Ian Hutchinson and Tom and Ben Birchall, with an impressive 24 TT wins between them.
"Hutchy" has proved to be something of a bionic man, having twice come back from serious injury which on both occasions almost cost him a leg. Clearly with a few tales to tell, his on-stage interviews are not to be missed.

Likeable brothers Ben and Tom Birchall have dominated the sidecar TT in recent years, winning the past five races. The pair, who clinched their third world title in 2018, will also have their TT-winning outfit on display and will be on stage during Saturday and Sunday.

TT stars will also include nine-time winner Charlie Williams. Not only will Charlie have one of his TT-winning Yamahas on display, but he plans to launch his long-awaited autobiography at the show too. Fans’ favourite John Cooper intends to launch his biography on the same weekend, with both stars signing copies for fans.

Not forgetting its classic roots, the star line-up will include former Honda factory team-mates from the sixties, Tommy Robb and Jim Redman.
Of course the TT isn’t just about the riders. The show aims to host the most eclectic display of 10 genuine former TT machines ever assembled. The collection includes a 1926 AJS GR10, which finished third in that year’s TT in the hands of Frank Longman; an ex-HG Tyrell-Smith 1932 works Rudge, which also finished third in that year’s Junior TT race; a minuscule 50cc Honda CR110, a three-cylinder MV Agusta, a 1984 Ducati TT2 with TT history and an ex-Joey Dunlop RC45.

The Isle of Man TT races were first staged in 1907 – but the milestone 100th meeting will only be marked later this year.
Two world wars, plus the UK foot and mouth epidemic which caused the cancellation of much UK sport including the TT, took out a total of 12 years, meaning 100 years of TT racing can be celebrated all over again.

NEWS: JONATHAN REA AND THE LATE WILLIAM DUNLOP HONOURED

JONATHAN REA AND THE LATE WILLIAM DUNLOP HONOURED

World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea has been named Belfast Telegraph Sports Star of the Year for the second time in a row.

Meanwhile, William Dunlop was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame, accepted on the night by his brother Michael.

Rea won the 2018 WSBK Championship, breaking a host of records on the way.

The Ballyclare rider is the first man to have won the championship in four successive seasons. He also broke Carl Fogarty's overall wins record when he claimed his 60th WBSK race success and broke the record of consecutive race wins with his 11 victories in a row to close the season. And, as if it all wasn't enough, Rea equalled Doug Polen's 17 year-old record of 17 wins in a single season.

Rea told the Telegraph: "It's scary to think I've done four in a row. The only way is down but I can't see retirement now. I'm having fun. I've just finished my training camp and I'm feeling better than ever," he said.

"I'm really motivated for this year and I can't wait to start. People say it's become boring but it's not boring for me. I'm having the time of my life winning races.

"My young son Jake has just started riding motocross. That keeps me young. I'm having the time of my life and I'm doing it with my family at my side. We're going to have great family albums!"

EVENTS: FANS RUB SHOULDERS WITH THE DALBEATTIE DESTROYER

Visitors to the Scottish Motorcycle Show this year will have the chance to meet the Dalbeattie Destroyer, Ian Simpson.

Ian Simpson The Dalbeattie Destroyer

Simpson began racing at the age of 16 and entered the British championship two years later. He won the TT Superbike class in the 1994 HEAT British Supercup (now known as the British Superbike Championship) on a Duckhams Crighton Norton, the final year Rotary Nortons were raced at this level as new homoglation rules required that a larger number of road-going bikes were produced than Norton could afford.

Other British titles won by Simpson were in Supersport, taking the 600cc Supercup championships in 1991 and 1994, and the 400cc national championship in 1993. He was Production Powerbike champion in 1997. Simpson also won three Isle of Man TT and five North West 200 races (including the Superbike class in 1995, 1996 and 1998).

Simpson was injury prone, breaking both legs four times, and it was a repeat of these injuries which caused him to retire in 2001, having narrowly escaped needing to have his right leg amputated. He later opened a sporting goods shop.

He made a one-off comeback in the International Classic Grand Prix race at the 2008 North West 200.

The Dalbeattie Destroyer will attend both days at the 2019 MCN Scottish Motorcycle Show (9/10 March).
