NEWS: AUCTION HOUSE HOPES FOR A BIT OF VIVA KNIEVEL

AUCTION HOUSE HOPES FOR A BIT OF VIVA KNIEVEL

Evel Kinevel's screen bike from the Viva Knievel film up for sale
Everyone’s heard about Steve McQueen’s desert sled coming up for sale at Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction on 7 January, and now here’s something that might be even better: Evel Knievel’s screen bike from Viva Knievel.

The 1976 Harley-Davidson XL 1000 was customised by Bud Ekins for the Hollywood movie in which Knievel played himself fighting Mexican drug dealers. Owned by Warner Brothers, the motorcycle was purchased from the studio after filming by Los Angeles-area Harley dealer Dick Hutchins and has been displayed ever since.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

It’s an incredible artefact of popular culture ridden in a movie by America’s greatest daredevil. "I came along at the right time in the right place," said Knievel. "America was down on its ass when I came along and needed somebody who was truthful and honest, someone who would spill blood and break bones, somebody who wasn't a phony."

The Knievel and McQueen bikes – a 1963 Triumph Bonneville formerly owned by Steve McQueen, modified by Bud Ekins and painted by Kenny Howard a.k.a. Von Dutch, plus other motorcycles – will be offered on Thursday, 7 January at Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Auction held at Bally’s Hotel and Casino on The Strip. For more information, visit bonhams.com/vegas.

NEWS: BROUGH TREASURE TROVE TO BE AUCTIONED IN APRIL

BROUGH TREASURE TROVE TO BE AUCTIONED IN APRIL

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
The Broughs of Bodmin- discovered

Eight long-lost Brough Superior motorcycles discovered in a Cornish village will be offered at Bonhams Sale of Important Collectors’ Motorcycles at Stafford on 24 April, 2016.

The "Broughs of Bodmin Moor" had been "lost" for more than 50 years.

“This is one of the greatest motorcycle discoveries of recent times,” said Ben Walker, International Director for Bonhams Collectors’ Motorcycle Department. “A lot of mystery surrounds these motorcycles, as very few people knew they still existed, many believing them to be an urban myth. There was a theory that they still existed somewhere in the West Country, but few knew where, until now.

“Stored in barns for more than 50 years, the motorcycles were discovered whole, in parts, and some were partially submerged under decades of dust, old machinery parts and household clutter.

“This is the last-known collection of unrestored Brough Superiors. Only eight four-cylinder machines were built, and the example in this collection is the final one to be re-discovered.”

Jonathan Vickers, Bonhams West Country motoring specialist, added: “The discovery of these Brough motorcycles in Cornwall is historically significant. We’re delighted these machines will now be offered for sale on an international platform for the first time in more than half a century.”

Brough Superior motorcycles are incredibly rare, powerful machines of the pre-war era. Dubbed the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles, they’re famed as the bike of choice for aficionados such as the playwright George Bernard Shaw, and T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, owner of eight models.

The late-vendor, Frank Vague, was an avid member of the Brough Superior Club. He acquired the majority of the collection in the early 1960s; they’ve since remained unused for some 50 years.

“There is a strong market for unrestored, highly original motorcycles,” added Walker. “Bonhams regularly achieves world record breaking figures for Brough Superior motorcycles, including unusual projects, which appeal to the enthusiast and collector of the brand. It would be great to see these back on the road, as they are all restorable.”

The motorcycles which form ‘The Broughs of Bodmin Moor’ Collection are:

•    The ex-Hubert Chantrey, 1938 Brough Superior 750cc BS4 – £80,000-120,000

•    1938 Brough Superior 982cc SS100 Project – £60,000-80,000

•    1926 Brough Superior SS100 – £30,000-40,000

•    1938 Brough Superior 982cc SS80 Project with Petrol Tube Sidecar – £22,000-32,000

•    1939 Brough Superior 982cc SS80 Project – £20,000-30,000

•    1938 Brough Superior 1,096cc 11-50HP Project – £16,000-22,000

•    1937 Brough Superior 982cc SS80 Project – £6,000-8,000

•    1936 Brough Superior 982cc SS80 Project – £6,000-8,000

ROAD-RACE ACE HICKMAN TO APPEAR AT NEWARK SHOW

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry related events and news
Peter Hickman
The Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic will welcome Lincolnshire race ace Peter Hickman. Hickman grabbed international headlines in November after securing a stunning victory at the Macau Grand Prix. It followed an impressive year for the 29-year-old who took the Fastest Lap by a Newcomer record at the Isle of Man TT with a 131mph circuit at this year’s races. Just days before the Macau win it had been announced that Hickman would be making the switch from the RAF BMW Reserves team to GB Moto Kawasaki for the 2016 British Superbike Championship and next year’s international road races. Classic show organiser Nick Mowbray said: “Peter has enjoyed a superb year culminating in the Macau win. He’s definitely served fans with notice of his superstar potential. We’re delighted he’s on board for our Newark event and he’ll surely prove a popular addition.” The show takes place at Newark Showground on 9/10 January, 2016 and will include trade stands and autojumble. Club stands and private entrants will also be displaying pristine restored and maintained classic machines of various makes models and eras. Also part of the event are two dedicated scooter halls which will mix displays, trade and jumble with interactive attractions such as the skills area and an engine rebuild competition. Former British scooter and sprint champion Norrie Kerr will be the Scooter World special guest for the weekend.

NEWS: 250 TWO-STROKE GP BIKES RETURN TO MOUNTAIN COURSE

2016 will see the full return of racing for 250cc two-stroke GP machines around the TT Mountain Circuit with the introduction of a new Lightweight Race into the schedule for the Classic TT Races presented by Bennetts.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

A mainstay of the TT programme for decades, 250cc two-stroke machines were fazed out of the event in 2004, as the motorcycle industry focused its efforts on the four-stroke market with the emergence of Superbike, Superstock and Supersport racing globally.

Some of today’s leading TT stars originally made their name on 250cc machines, with John McGuinness and Bruce Anstey recording their first TT wins on them in 1999 and 2002 respectively with McGuinness’s118.29 from 1999 the current Mountain Course lap record for 250cc machines.

The Lightweight Classic TT Race will be open to all 250cc GP bikes and will also absorb the machines from the previously staged Formula 2 Classic TT Race, with those machines featuring in their own sub class.

Meanwhile in a nod to tradition, the Bennetts 500cc Classic TT Race and the Okells Brewery 350cc Classic TT Race will change their names to Senior and Junior respectively. The Formula 1 Classic TT is also in for a name change, becoming the Superbike Classic Race and for the first time, will take place as a standalone race.

The Race Programme will start on Saturday 27 August with the Bennetts Senior Classic TT Race followed by the all new Lightweight Classic TT Race and will conclude on Monday 29 August with the Okells Junior Classic TT Race and the Motorsport Merchandise Superbike Classic TT Race.

The Classic TT, which is now in its fourth year since it was introduced to the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling in 2013 alongside the Manx Grand Prix, has seen significant growth with rising attendances, increased media coverage, free to air TV coverage in the UK and internationally, new commercial partners and close, spectacular racing as Classic Racing specialists have gone head to head with some of the world’s leading road racers.

Paul Phillips, TT and Motorsport Development Manager, Isle of Man Department of Economic Development commented: “The timing is right to introduce a race for proper 250cc two-stroke grand prix racing motorcycles at the Classic TT. They are so popular with fans because of the unique sounds and smells they produce. We are confident that we will attract a quality line up of riders on board some first class machinery for this new addition to the Classic TT race programme.”

David Cretney, the Isle of Man Government’s member responsible for Tourism and Motorsport commented: “I’m really looking forward to the return of two stroke machines to the Mountain Course.  Two strokes have featured in some of the most memorable races on the Isle of Man and the smell and sound will evoke many memories as well as undoubtedly creating some new ones. It’s important to remember that this is a spectator sport and we want to do everything that we can to ensure that fans are entertained by the spectacle.”

NEWS: HUTCHIE, KENT, REA, WOFFINDEN UP FOR AWARD

TT rider Ian Hutchinson is one of four bikers shortlisted for the Royal Automobile Club’s prestigious Torrens Trophy.  The other riders on the shortlist, which was revealed on Saturday at the Motorcycle Live Show at the NEC in Birmingham, are 2015 Moto3 championship winner Danny Kent, World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea and Double Speedway World Champion Tai Woffinden.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
The Bingley Bullet - Ian Hutchinson
Hutchinson, affectionately known as "The Bingley Bullet", won three races at this year’s Isle of Man TT Races, the first time he has stood on the podium on the Isle of Man since his record-breaking five victories in a week in 2010.

Hutchinson has fought back from a compound tibia and fibia fracture sustained at Silverstone in 2010, shortly after his historic TT, that at one point saw him face the threat of having his left leg amputated.  He has undergone more than 30 operations as a result of his injuries.

Barrie Baxter, Torrens Trophy nominations committee chairman, commented: “Ian Hutchinson’s story and subsequent success is not only one of the most remarkable in the history of motorcycle racing, but also the world of sport in general. His achievement in returning to the top step of the Isle of Man is one of the truly great stories of world sport and he is an inspiration for everyone who is struggling to overcome injury.”

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
Danny Kent
The Torrens Trophy recognises outstanding contributions to the cause of safe and skilful motorcycling, technical excellence to further the cause of motorcycling, or to have shown outstanding skill in international motor cycling sporting events in the United Kingdom.

The Torrens Trophy was first awarded in 1978 in memory of Arthur Bourne, a motorcycling journalist, who was also a vice-chairman of the RAC, who wrote a column under the name Torrens.  The trophy has only been awarded nine times since its inception. It is only awarded when the club feels that the achievement justifies it.

The club's Torrens Trophy nominations committee, which comprises club member Ben Cussons, ex-bike racer Barrie Baxter, well-respected motorcycle journalist Mat Oxley, former racer and commentator Steve Parrish and Arthur Bourne's son Richard Bourne, judges the award.

Previous winners include BMW in 1989 in recognition for its contribution to motorcycle safety through its development of its anti-lock braking system and in 1998 to Ian Kerr of the Metropolitan Police for 20 years of tireless work in promoting safe and responsible motorcycling.

In 2008 World Superbike Champion James Toseland was awarded the trophy for his immense contribution to raising the profile of motorcycle racing in this country and more recently Tom Sykes for becoming the fifteenth World Superbike Champion, and the fourth from Great Britain.  Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne won the award in 2014 for winning his fourth BSB title.

The Torrens Trophy nominations committee will announce the winner in January 2016.

Steve Parrish MAD show tour continues...

BBC commentator, ex-motorcycle and truck racer and eternal practical joker Steve Parrish (Stavros) continues to tour the UK with his MAD theatre show, MAD standing for My Adolescent Dad and starring his long-suffering daughter Frankie.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

MAD is billed as a "completely different, colourful, humorous and, at times daring portrayal of this man's career".

Steve Parrish raced at the highest level of motorcycle racing, becoming British champion in 1976 and fifth in the 1977 500cc world championship, as team mate to that year's champion Barry Sheene.

Barry who met Steve in 1975 is quoted as saying: "If he was to set up his bike as well as his victims and had put as much effort into the bike as he did the intricate pranks he pulled on people he would certainly have been a World Champion."

Parrish is also co-hosting, with ex-race Jamie Whitham, the Blackhorse stage entertainment at Motorcycle Live, which opens tomorrow and runs until 6 December at the NEC, Birmingham.

With the show opening an hour earlier on Friday, Saturday(s) and Sunday(s) this means stage activity will be running for even longer - more interviews, more celebrities, more games and more prizes.

Each day there will be a host of riders and celebrities interviewed on the main stage, across a spectrum of BSB, WSB, Moto GP, Speedway, and TT disciplines. Riders will be on hand for signing sessions and photo opportunities.

The 2016 MAD tour dates are:

Date:                           Venue:                                                            Time:

Johnny Depp want to make Doohan film

Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp has said he wants to make a documentary about racing legend Mick Doohan. Depp announced his plan after he, his wife and, notoriously, his dogs, stayed with the five-times 500cc GP world champion at his mansion on the Australian Gold Coast. The actor/producer was in Australia filming the latest instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

Depp stayed at Doohan’s place for five months - during which time Depp had to repatriate his "quarantine criminal" dogs - and clearly grew fond of the former Honda GP man, saying: “I want to a documentary about him, he’s a wonderful man.”

Doohan won the coveted title five times in the 1990s, an era where the 500cc two-stroke GP motorcycles had no rider aids of electronics and made awesome power in a tiny rev-range.

A film would certainly help the motorcycle industry cause!

NEWS: LIFE-SIZE CHOCOLATE MOTORBIKE-CAKE AT CAROLE NASH BASH

LIFE-SIZE CHOCOLATE MOTORBIKE-CAKE AT CAROLE NASH BASH

A life-size replica of a motorcycle made entirely from cake and chocolate was the centre-point at a party to celebrate the 30th birthday of motorcycle insurance broker Carole Nash over the weekend.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

The chocolate bike was unveiled at the event, held at Manchester's Imperial War Museum on Saturday night, 7 November.

Measuring two metres in length and nearly one metre tall, the unique creation is modelled on the motorcycle Carole Nash first insured back in 1985 - an AJS 1927 - which to this day is still insured through the company.

Pictured cutting the cake are Carole Nash, CEO David Newman and AJS owner Ivan Rhodes.

Also to mark its birthday, the company created a special tribute video looking back at how the company started from Carole at her dining room table, to the strong 300-plus workforce that they employ today.

The video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDGGeLmx6m8&feature=youtu.be

Workwear brand Dickies has announced that the winner of this year’s Dickies-sponsored wheel-change challenge at Motorcycle Live later this month will receive a brand-new Kawasaki Ninja 300 motorcycle.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

The event, which takes place at the NEC from 28 November to 6 December, will host five contestants per day on the main Blackhorse stage, all vying to change the wheel on Mason Law’s championship-winning bike in the fastest time.

The stage, branded the British Eurosport Entertainment Zone, will be hosted by Steve Parrish and James Whitham and will feature a whole host of interviews and competitions throughout the duration of the show.

The Ninja 300 was a prize in this year’s UK Worker of the Year competition, an initiative run by the workwear brand and sponsored by Kawasaki. With the winner having the choice between the Ninja and a £5000 holiday and picking the latter, it has allowed the stunning motorcycle to become a prize at the show.
