NEWS: CHARITY APPEALS FOR HELP TO BUY A BODMIN BROUGH

CHARITY APPEALS FOR HELP TO BUY A BODMIN BROUGH

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

A motorcycle charity is appealing for help to buy one of the rusting Bodmin Broughs, which it plans to restore and sell. Motorcycle Outreach (MoR) UK has launched a crowdfunding appeal to fund the purchase. So far it has raised £120 of the £100,000 target.

The Bodmin Broughs are to be auctioned by Bonhams on 24 April and Motorcycle Outreach (MoR) UK says a successful restoration and re-auction could unlock tens of thousands of pounds for its charitable work in Indonesia and Africa, where it supports motorcycle-based healthcare transport projects in developing countries.

Commenting on the Bodmin Broughs, Ben Walker, international director for Bonhams Collectors' Motorcycle Department said: "This is one of the greatest motorcycle discoveries of recent times. This is the last known collection of unrestored Brough Superiors; there will not be another opportunity like this."

Simon Dufton, director of Motorcycle Outreach, said: “The restoration potential for any of these bikes means that this is not just a hopeful project - it is a project based upon sound history of the assets involved alongside the time-proven skills of our restorer Craig Carey-Clinch.” Carey-Clinch, who is also a director of MoR and a well-known motorcycle industry figure, already has a strong track record of restoring classic motorcycles.

Dufton continued: “All it takes is time and a good motorcycle restorer. We have both! What we now need is the funding to make this project happen .... and that is why we are launching this crowdfunding appeal. We believe it will be possible to generate a strong return from this project, but we can only realise its ambition if we get support.”

People, organisations and businesses can support the MoR project by visiting the Crowdfunder site on www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bodmin-brough-restoration-for-motorcycle-outreach

NEWS: Busy time at the auctions...

'SUPERSALE' SETS VOLUME-PERFORMANCE RECORD

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news

BCA's bike auction team went into overdrive on Friday, 26 February at Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, sending 210 motorcycles, scooters, mopeds and quads on their way from an entry of 241. This double ton-plus result is the best volume performance by a UK auction house since BDN started reporting the auction scene.

BCA billed it as a "Supersale", and was delighted to see the term more than justified. The auction attracted 500 buyers on site and online, reported BCA's bike specialist Terence Guymer. The result underpins the growing demand for used machines and dealer strategy to have stock ready for Easter and the main sales season, he added.

Sold bikes included 11 Harley-Davidsons, three making five-figure returns. Star bike was a £12,100 Ducati Panigale. The RSPCA benefited from the sale to the tune of £250 thanks to a new crash hat signed by former WSB champion and TV 'King of the Jungle' Carl Fogarty.

BCA holds monthly bike sales at its permanent Peterborough site on the last Friday of the month. Next sale 25 March 1pm. Details: 01733 588257.

NEWS: FREE Skills & Safety Assessment with IAM

Every motorcyclist in the UK is being offered the unique opportunity of a free 60 minute skills and safety riding assessment, courtesy of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), over the next four months.

British Dealer News is the best place for motorcycle industry news
IAM: Offering FREE Skills & Safety Assessment for every biker
The IAM has embarked on its biggest ever free giveaway to riders to coincide with the start of spring and the beginning of the bike racing season.

And to mark the launch of the free taster campaign, #IAMRideFree, the IAM has teamed up with Kawasaki UK and Kawasaki-backed stunt riding champion Lee Bowers along with car and bike racer Emma Selway to create the ultimate skills competition. To find out who won and to see the thrills and spills of filming, click here:#

The film, shot at Santa Pod Raceway, features Lee and Emma being stopped in their high-speed tracks and set a series of slow riding challenges by IAM riding experts Mark Lewis and Richard Gladman.

Lee said: "There's little doubt that I love riding at high speeds, as do many riders, but I know that the place for it is in a safe place - and not on the road. A lot of my tricks involve needing to ride at slow speed and I've taught myself how to do different stunts. It was great to spend some time with the IAM and learn how it 'should' be done. I think the incentive they've launched is great, 60 minutes of tuition - for free."

Added Emma: "It's easy to forget the importance of slower speed skills, especially for someone like me who spends a great deal of time, in work and play, on race tracks going quickly. A lot of people see driving and riding at speed to be the skill that needs to be nailed and that fast is the only way to have fun.  I think Lee and I proved that to not be the case as we had a great deal of fun learning slow speed skills and the challenges set for us became incredibly rewarding and self-satisfying."

Mark said: "Many riders across the country will be getting their bikes out of the garage, after a long and wet winter. You know your bike needs a once over before it's safe to ride all summer long - but have you considered whether your riding might too be showing signs of wear?

"What many people don't realise is that a bit of further training can increase enjoyment massively - a point demonstrated by Lee and Emma in our video. Want to get that bend right? Make better progress? Get in touch and see what advanced riding is all about."

To sign up for the IAM free rider taster sessions visit http://www.iam.org.uk/ridefree
