NEWS: Chinese investors buy Hein Gericke Europe

The Paul Liao Group, distributors of LS2 helmets worldwide, has bought Hein Gericke Europe, it was announced at EXPO.

British Dealer News brings you the best motorcycle industry news

A new company, Hein Gericke Europe, will be formed on February 1 and the brand will eventually be reintroduced into the UK.

The Liao Group has pledged that the company, which has collapsed twice in recent years, will be properly financed and will retain the same variety of leading brands.

Hein Gericke Europe will comprise 66 shops, with eight in Austria, two in Belgium, one in each of Luxembourg and Holland and 54 in Germany, said Mart Schiks, senior consultant with the Liao Group. The Liao Group was investing “more than £10m” in the venture.

Schiks revealed the group had wanted to buy the UK operation as well but had been beaten to it by J&S, who itself had tried to buy the UK operation of the German company before it went bust (full story in the imminent February issue of BDN).

“The UK we missed because everything went so fast,” said Schiks. “By the time we spoke to the receiver, the deal was done. We would like to have continued the UK operation because it is a very important market and Hein Gericke had been there for a long time and was well known for quality.

“We are not like the investors who bought it a couple of times and sold it to make a profit to sell it again. We want to make HG Europe a strong number one like it once was. It has great potential. It only needs a boost and it must be funded to get successful again.”

Schiks explained that it would take time to sort out the European operation but pledged: “Hein Gericke will be back in the UK sometime in the future.”

Bournemouth is to host a new Wheels Festival, combining “motion, power and elegance in three days of high-energy action”.

British Dealer News is the best for motorcycle events news

The event, from 24-26 May, will feature historic classic cars and world-class BMX stunts to monster truck shows and crazy freestyle motocross FMX stunts and jumps. The historic pier will be used for Bournemouth’s first ever jump attempts.

The East Cliff, overlooking the beach, will host a live-action, closed-road demonstration course where visitors can get close to the sights and sounds of racing cars, sleek supercars and bikes in action. Plus, there will be two parades each day as well as sideshows, trade stalls and places to eat.

The town centre will be home to wheel-themed displays, the demonstration cars paddock area and a pre-war vintage car display in the Pavilion car park.

Saturday and Sunday evenings will also see parades of cars and bikes around the town centre, and a Classic Vehicle Pageant is planned for Meyrick Park, where hundreds of classic cars, bikes and other vehicles will gather each day as part of the Wheels Festival.

Norton keeps its cool for the TT

Norton Racing has agreed a tie-up with award-winning heat-management company Zircotec in a bid to win the TT.

British Dealer News brings you the best motorcycle industry news
Norton- looking for TT glory
The British marque will use the Abingdon-based company’s ceramic coatings and ZircoFlex ceramic, aluminium-backed heatshield material to control heat on the exhaust, airbox, bodywork and rear shock absorber on its SG2 prototypes for the Isle of Man races.

“We are delighted to enter into a partnership with such an iconic British manufacturer,” comments Peter Whyman, Zircotec’s sales and marketing director. “The Norton name is synonymous with the TT and we are very excited to be working closely with the works team as it prepares for the 2014 event.”

After an initial shakedown at Bruntingthorpe, the Norton team will travel to Spain for an official test programme.   As part of the technical agreement, Norton engineers will record results during its test programme and make them available to Zircotec.  The recording of performance data in extreme thermal environments will aid the development of new products for the coatings specialist.

Norton plans to enter two machines in the Senior TT and Superbike TT, the blue riband races of the famous Isle of Man TT, held between 24 May and 6 June.

Zircotec offers a wide range of plasma-sprayed ceramic and metallic coatings that protect components against the effects of heat, wear, abrasion and corrosion.

HAYNES GIVES ROSSI THE HEAVE

Book publisher Haynes is dumping its race-star autobiographies to concentrate on the "core" workshop manual format.

British Dealer News brings you the best motorcycle industry news

The Somerset-based company has taken the decision following its recent business restructure.

This move will affect a swathe of well-known specialist bikesports authors such as Mat Oxley, Michael Scott, Julian Ryder and Mac McDiarmid, typically producing biographies and ghosted autobiographies showcasing motorcycle race stars. Just about every top name in British motorcycle sport, including Carl Fogarty, James Whitham, John Reynolds, Mick Grant and Joey Dunlop, as well as MotoGP stars like Valentini Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, have appeared in the Haynes catalogue.

In the first instance, writers are being offered the chance to purchase residual stock of their books at enhanced discount prices. Presumably the rest will be remaindered for disposal through the book trade.

TRADE EXPO BOUNCES BACK

MOTORCYCLE Trade EXPO bounced back after taking a weather-related hit in 2013, with this year’s visitor numbers up almost 30 per cent.

British Dealer News is the best for motorcycle industry news
Motorcycle Trade EXPO

The leading trade show in Europe, held at the NEC in Birmingham, attracted 180 exhibitors over the three days – 19, 20 and 21 January.

There was an air of optimism on the stands, with some exhibitors claiming to do have done record business in the run up to this year’s season.

Apart from the chance for dealers and suppliers to meet and do business face to face, one of the main attractions was the guest appearance of MotoGP star Scott Redding and ex-racer and commentator Steve Parrish.

Redding mingled with the crowds, attended the stand of his main sponsor, Alpinestars, and gave a revealing interview to Parrish in which he showed he’s well prepared for the demands of competing in the world’s most challenging race series. Cal Crutchlow watch out.

As well as the trade stands, on which many exhibitors were offering special show-only deals, attractions included the Electric Zone alternative-powered bike test area, the Knowledge Shop, and a display of modern and classic motorcycles, from a Scott Squirrell and a 1939 Levis, lent by the nearby National Motorcycle Museum, to a modern Chinese scooter.

A muscular Krazy Horse custom v-twin, Buell-powered Spud by Mac Motorcycles, and a limited-edition Steve McQueen replica Triumph-powered Metisse off-roader attracted a lot of attention of the British Dealer News stand.

For a full report on EXPO 2014, including full attendance figures and dealer and distributor reaction, see the forthcoming issue of British Dealer News.

There will also be a detailed report on the British Dealer News Industry Awards night, hosted by Steve Parrish, with a full list of winners.

FESTIVAL OF 1000 BIKES CALLED OFF

The Festival of 1000 Bikes will not take place in 2014.

british dealer news is the best for motorcycle industry news
Festival of 1000 bikes - not in 2014

In a statement, the Vintage Motor Cycle Club Ltd said the decision had been taken “with great reluctance”.

The club states: “Motorsport fans will be aware of the uncertainty that surrounded the future of Mallory Park in the latter part of 2013, with the circuit operators (Mallory Park Motorsport Ltd) going into administration in the autumn.

“The new operator, Real Motor Sport Ltd, was recently announced and we have full confidence in it. Indeed our racing arm (BHR) already has a date for Mallory Park this year. However, because crucial months of planning and preparation have been lost, we are not confident of delivering this prestigious event in the amount of time remaining.”

VMCC apologised to members, volunteers and fans and thanked sponsors including Michelin, Footman James, Mortons Media, Bonhams and Eriks for all their support.

“We hope to see many of you at our other events and shows throughout the year and look forward to making an early announcement regarding the Festival of 1000 Bikes for 2015.”

JOURNEY THROUGH MOTORCYCLE HISTORY

The Motorcycle Story will be among a new series of exhibitions at the National Motor Museum. The display will “immerse the visitor in a journey through motorcycling history, the human quest for freedom and the desire to win”. Machines are displayed in their historical and cultural context; tying technological developments to changing trends in fashion, style and sport.

The Motorcycle Story

Memorabilia including clothing and trophies won by sporting greats can be seen in displays which cover a wide range of racing disciplines, road safety and British youth culture of the 1950s and 60s.

The Beaulieu museum has an ambitious plan for a complete re-display of its collection following the success of the BOND IN MOTION exhibition, which was seen by over 800,000 visitors during its successful two-year run which has just ended.

Bond fans came from all over the world and the exhibition was recognised as the Large Attraction of the Year at the 2013 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

The exhibition, which celebrated 50 years of the enduring James Bond franchise, featured 50 of the most iconic vehicles from the Bond films and was the largest official collection of original James Bond film vehicles staged anywhere in the world.

This is the 50th anniversary year of Donald Campbell’s Bluebird CN7 record, and the museum is marking the occasion with a new display, For Britain & For The Hell Of It, featuring Beaulieu’s iconic land speed record cars, tells the story of British pluck, technological mastery and national pride – alongside new vehicles with a more alternative land speed heritage.

A moving audio-visual presentation transports you back to a golden age of invention, courage and patriotism and introduces you to those who are keeping the record breaking dream alive today.

Both new displays will be open for Easter 2014 and can be seen as part of a visit to the whole Beaulieu attraction.
